The youths from the Millennial generation are getting quite difficult to be approached by prospective employers, mainly due to their expectations they have from employers. According to Smartree, one of the leaders in the Romanian market of outsourcing HR processes, the salary is sno longer the most important consideration when comes to choosing the future work place.
Smartree showed that Millenials, known also as the Y generation, differ from the X generation (their parents) when choosing a job.
First of all, the Millenials have the desire to get promoted as fast as possible, without having the patience of going through all the stages of the career development process. Moreover, they do exhibit the desire of learning leadership skills.
Secondly, the youths from Y generation are always one step ahead in comparison to their precedent generation. This fact is possible due to their familiarity with the internet and other online communication channels, along with they have literally grown up.
“The access to the online environment enables them to be much more informed about the existing companies in the marketplace. They are getting more outgoing and creative in comparison to their predecessors. Furthermore, the majority of them are open to new challenges by assuming without hesitation responsibilities on projects for which they are not yet professionally skilled, says Raluca Penes, Smartree HR Coordinator.
The most appropriate approach from the employers’ side
On a general basis the Millennials have a complex view on life, particularly on their career. On one hand, the idea of living a balanced life means a great deal for them, and their free time and possibility of practicing various hobbies are matters of highly importance. On the other hand, they wish to perform in companies which share through their culture the same values like theirs. This fact gives to the youths from X generation a sense to their efforts and therefore the employer has to consider much more aspects in their recruitment strategy.
The salary and the fringe benefits have to be motivating and complex. Besides the salary, the young people wish to benefit from various other benefits like for instance, medical insurance, fitness subscription, free days or discount cards. They are asking just from the first meeting which are the fringe benefits offered by the prospective employer, according to Smartree.
Hobbys, more important than a home or a car
For the Millenials it is very important to have a flexible job which could enable them to benefit from their free time as much as possible.
“In comparison to the X generation, the Millennials are focusing much on the balance between personal life and career. Although, their values are not necessarily related to buying a house or a car, they do wish spend more time with their family, for their hobby or other activities linked to personal development”, explains Raluca Penes.
According to the information provided by Smartree, there are professional domains where the Millenials are requesting a flexible schedule. The idea of time sheet or fix schedule may represent a constraint of their activity and therefore, of their outcomes. While the previous generation prefers the fix working hours and overtime, the new generations prefers obviously the flexible working time.
Considering all the facts, the role of the HR department with companies is getting much more important.
“The recruiters have to know and understand very well the profile of the Milennials – their needs, wish of getting promoted, abilities and their creativity. The role that HR specialists have to play now within the companies is that that they need to identify and implement, together with decision taking factors, professional development programs and fringe benefits systems that have the aim to attract and motivate this generation”, considers Raluca Penes.
