The employees receive 12 days off as public holidays under the Labor Code. In case of an usual work schedule, Monday through Friday, the employees are enjoyed the free days during the work week.
In 2014 only 9 of 12 holidays are during the work week and two of them have already passed – January 1st and 2nd.

Of the 12 legal holidays, only 9 are during the work week, as the calendar set. As January 1st and 2nd passed, Romanian employees will enjoy only more 7 free days from Monday to Friday in 2014.
First days of Easter and Pentecost are always Sunday and Saint Andrew is celebrated, in 2014, also on a Sunday.
3 more legal holydays proposed in the Senate
Four legislative proposals refer to three national days off in addition to the 12 existing holidays in the Labor Code. Two of the proposals are for May 10, the initiative that has already received positive votes from the Committee for public administration, land management and environmental protection and the Commission for Human Rights, Cults and Minorities.
Another day proposed as a legal holiday is May 21, but it received negative vote from the Economic and Social Council.
And the third day of Easter is proposed as a legal day off with a favorable opinion of the Economic and Social Council.
All these proposals are recorded in the Senate, first notified Chamber. For these days to be included in the Labor Code, they must be approved by all committees reported, then be voted by the Chamber of Deputies.
Who is going to work in the days declared off and how will be reworded
There are categories of employees who are forced to work in the legal holidays, the ones who have jobs in which the work cannot be interrupted due to specific activity (e.g. units in the production process that cannot be interrupted or employees of health care facilities and stuff who work in the food industry).
Those who work in legal free days for reasons related to the nature of the work are entitled to a compensatory day off in the next 30 days.
Also, when justified reasons may not be granted compensatory time off, the Labor Code provides that employees receive a bonus that cannot be less than 100 % of base salary. If not respecting the law by granting compensatory time off or the legal bonus indicated, the employers risk a fine between 5,000 and 10,000 lei.
